Phase Three

We never set out to “fix” Lumen. From the start, it was clear this wasn’t about rewriting who she was- it was about helping her remember who she might’ve been, had the world been kinder. And somewhere along the way, she began to remember.

The weight came back slowly, first across her ribs, then her hips and neck. Her coat grew soft again, the once-dull blue spots standing out bright against white. The thrush cleared after weeks of treatment and careful trimming, and though her feet would always need extra attention, she began walking with more freedom, her steps longer and more certain. The sores healed, inside and out.

But it was her mind, her spirit, that took the longest, and in the end, that’s what I’m proudest of.

Lumen started following Zenyatta around the pasture, never far, never clingy. Just there. Sometimes they groomed one another under the trees. Sometimes they stood in the sun with heads low, eyes half-closed, utterly at peace. Other horses joined in, and Lumen didn’t run. She didn’t hide. She held her space, unsure but trying. Always trying.

We started calling her “the quiet shadow,” though her presence was no longer sorrowful, it was calm: thoughtful. You could feel her learning to breathe again.

She may never be a show horse or trail partner. Her joints still creak when the weather turns, and sometimes loud noises set her trembling. But she no longer bolts. She looks.. ears high.

I made the decision not to rehome her.

She stays here, with us. with me. Not because no one else would want her, but because this is where she began to come back to life. She knows the rhythms of our barn now: the rattle of feed buckets, the morning greetings, the creak of the old gate before the pasture opens. She knows my footsteps. She knows she is safe.

We still have our rituals. I scratch behind her ears while she munches hay, and sometimes she leans into my side, quiet and sure. She still doesn’t love halters, but she lowers her head when I offer one now. Every once in a while, when she’s feeling brave, she trots across the field just for the joy of it.

There are still shadows in her.. there always will be. But they don’t define her anymore.

She’s not the broken broodmare standing at the back of the paddock.

She’s not the trembling ghost who flinched from every touch.

She’s Lumen.

Named for the light that was always there.

And now, she shines.

Event: 2025 Loshenka Makeover

Phase Number: Into the Future

Horse ID#: 11077

- Issues: Underweight, Sores, Thrush

- Description: This horse was used as a broodmare at a colour breeder's facility. She passed her pretty colouring on to her foals, but was poorly cared for during her pregnancies, leaving her now underweight, covered in sores, and with a bad case of thrush. She has very little muscle and a scared, but curious, attitude.
