Her hooves, soft and rotten: in places they were thick with thrush -likely untreated for months. Her muscle loss was severe; she moved like a shadow, stiff and unsure, every step a negotiation between pain and memory.
I swallowed hard, eyes on Lumen’s ribs as they rose and fell. She deserved so much better than what the world had given her so far.
“She’s been surviving, not living,” the vet murmured. “But she’s not past saving.”
