Show offs Get What They Deserve

A gentle breeze blew across the fields. The spring grass was growing long and hayfever was affecting sufferers everywhere. For the two mares out in the field, it was a nice day for grazing and enjoying the weather. Until it was interrupted by a loud whinny.

Moon and Glory lifted their heads only to see a black stallion on the other side of the fence. He pranced up and down, nickering, throwing up his head and holding out his silvery cream tail.

The blue roan snorted. Did he really think he was showing off like that? He was nothing but a young upstart.

The gold cream champagne mare rolled her eyes. He was young and new, what else could they expect?

Moon agreed. His owner was cocky and rude too. A fitting pair.

Glory looked over at her. The new boy Moon’s rider was teaching? She glanced back at the showy stallion. She felt for poor Rena having to teach that pair. They couldn’t be easy.

Her friend snorted. Neither liked listening to instructions.

Meanwhile, Blaze didn’t let up. He continued to prance up and down the fence line. He knew he had their attention, they kept looking his way. He just had to keep it up until they finally came over. He lifted his knees a little higher like he did in the dressage ring and held out his magnificent tail in all its shimmering glory. The humans always said it was such a striking colour compared to his coat. Surely it would garner him the ladies affections.

Snorting and shaking her head, Glory turned away. Maybe if they ignored him, he would stop.

Moon watched for a moment longer. She actually thought it was a little funny. Maybe if she encouraged him, he’d keep going.

The cream mare gaped at her, affronted. Encourage his madness? That was a terrible idea.

The blue roan shot her a smug look. Or the best. She was supposed to be doing some training with him tomorrow, what better fun than to make sure he was thoroughly exhausted before then.

Glory snorted in amusement. Perhaps that would teach him to not be so stupid as to think the world revolved around him.

Prancing in place, Moon let out a laughing nicker. It might teach his rider to be less of a horsefly too. Her looking so much better in comparison was only a pleasant side effect.

Blaze slowed his efforts as one of the mares turned away. It seemed it wasn’t working as well as he would have liked. Maybe he needed to try something else. A proper canter down the fence line might do it, displaying his strength and with his tail properly streaming behind him. He turned and trotted off. Settling himself a fair distance up the fence, he reared up and whinnied to get their attention. He saw both of them look his way. Satisfied, he landed neatly and cantered off down along the fence, keeping his stride even and holding his tail aloft to flow behind him.

He saw the blue roan mare arch her neck and nicker at him. The cream one turned back around, raising a hoof to watch. Success! He pranced and came to a stop, feeling particularly satisfied with himself.

Just then the cream mare nickered, battering her eyelashes and encouraging him to do that again. Blaze ached his neck proudly. Who was he to deny the mare’s request?

The next day when training rolled around, Blaze was indeed still tired and sloppy as he worked with his rider. Meanwhile, Moon worked flawlessly. She continued to give him smug looks every time he glanced over at her. He snorted. That was the last time he was going to try and impress any stupid mares.
