Leon´s First Snow
Lean was a foal when he smelled the snow for the first time. Since he was a spring foal, he was already quite big when the winter arrived. His coat got a bit darker with the colder weather. The grass was no longer so juicy and green; it had turned yellowish and looked quite sad. Because the temperatures during the nights were getting too cold, he spent them in a barn by the side of his mother, who took great care of him. The mornings were getting longer, with less sunlight coming through the window and rising later and later.
Sleeping peacefully with his mother in the barn as always, the stall was lighter than any other morning. The window was illuminating the place and was covered in a layer of something that looked like white dust. After a fast breakfast, it was time for their morning walk outside. Nicolas came up to the stall, pulled the lever that unlocked the door, and put a prepared rope halter on Holy. This time he also threw a blanket over her back and tied it up. He also had a blanket for Leon, but Leon jumped back and resisted coming any closer after that. Nicolas gave up and let Leon go without it. Holy followed him out, and Leon also ran after them. When coming through the main gate, the cold air hit their noses like a sharp dart. It wasn’t something pleasant, but thankfully, the blanket kept Holy warm. Nicolas was wearing around four layers of clothing and a thick leather coat. Leon finally understood what was the point of the weird piece of cloth, but it was too late to go back. Thankfully, their walks didn’t take the whole day.
When Leon looked around, he couldn’t believe his eyes. Everything was covered in a layer of white dust, or, as he learned later, people called it "snow." His first instinct was to taste it. He jumped to a nearby pile and stuck out his tongue. When the tongue touched it, he instantly jumped back—it pinched his tongue and came through his whole body. Shaking it off, he tried again. This time he knew what to expect. It tasted weird—specifically, it tasted like nothing? He analyzed the taste and came to the conclusion that it’s closest to water. Weirdly, he continued to eat the snow as they were walking around the stables.
Most of the trails were cleared up, but when it was time to step off the swept path, Leon didn’t want to continue. Holy showed him there’s nothing to be scared of; it was just snow! Leon, even with doubts, stretched his front leg and slowly started placing it on the snow. It was so soft and fluffy. He continued and carefully walked in. The layer was reaching just under his knee. Leon tried to take a few steps. It was harder than he expected; the soft layer was giving him quite a bit of resistance. The easiest way to go was to put his leg completely out, move the leg, and push it down through the thick layer. He made a few steps this way, shaking more and more with each one, walking about five meters until he fell. But the fall didn’t hurt; it was actually quite a nice experience.
As he was lying there, he started to roll, making some sort of snow angel. Nicolas was watching the whole thing and couldn’t resist smiling. It was his favorite part of the year when the foals got to experience the snow for the first time. Some foals would get scared and run back into their stalls to wait until it’s spring again; others would run out and start jumping around, leaving various tracks. Thankfully, Leon was more of the second example. Not scared, Nicolas continued their walk, also struggling with deep snow. After they´ve done their circle around the ranch, he took them back to the stable. He took off the halter and balnket of Holy, closed the stall and went on to take care of other mares and their foals. Lean still in shock from his experience with snow, curled up in corner under his mother and took a long nap.
