Cascade's medical issues are comlicated, and the soft tissue injuries in her hind legs are taking a long time to heal. Even though she's a smart, energetic young horse, it's uncertain if and when she'll be able to be ridden again.

Her return to work is slow, sometimes trying her patience as well as Will's. Still, when given a task she puts her whole mind and body into it, and seems to enjoy the short groundwork exercises allowed by the vet. Her intelligence and energy mean that Will has to come up with increasingly challenging tasks for her, while remaining easy enough on her physically. When she is mentally stimulated enough, she's focused and curious, and Will longs to discover more about her abilities under saddle. For now, they'll both have to make do with enrichment feeders, hand walking and groundwork.

Despite the difficulties, Will feels like he has become very close with Cascade, and knows he will have a loyal partner for life.
