[PHASE 3] Into the Future

After their training session with Erika, Freak and Frida continued to practise Working Equitation exercises independently for a couple of weeks. It wasn’t long until a change in the stallion’s gaits became apparent, and others pointed out to Frida that he had also gotten into better shape. Looking at older pictures of her horse, Frida realised how big of a difference her efforts had made. Freak was shapely and noticeably more agile than previously. The stallion also seemed more motivated to work with Frida now that she had found what type of rides and exercises he liked.

Encouraged by Freak's progress and lack of pain, Frida set her sights on something more ambitious: competing in a W.E. show. She had begun admiring the discipline after that first lesson and soon an entry-level show was coming up, and it seemed like the perfect opportunity to showcase Freak's newfound skills.

One crisp morning, as the sun was rising, Frida tacked up Freak for another training session. The air was filled with the fresh scent of dew-covered grass as Frida led her Loshenka to the arena, where they would work on perfecting the various elements of Working Equitation. They began with the dressage phase, focusing on precision and fluidity. Frida guided Freak through a series of intricate movements and felt a sense of pride as Freak responded to her cues with enthusiasm, his movements becoming more refined and controlled with each session.

Next, they moved on to the obstacle phase. Frida had set up a course that included barrels to weave through, a small wooden bridge to cross, and a bull with a ring to spear. At first, Freak was hesitant about some of the more challenging obstacles, but Frida's encouragement helped him. Together, they practised each element until Freak navigated the course with ease.

The final phase, cattle handling, was the most daunting for Frida. She had never worked with cattle before, and neither had Freak. However, Erika had given them some tips during their last session, and Frida was determined to put them to use. She arranged for a friend who owned cattle to help them practise. At first, Freak was unsure about the large animals, but under Frida's steady guidance, he gradually became more comfortable. They practised herding and manoeuvring the cattle, working on communication and precision.

Weeks turned into months, and with each passing day, Frida and Freak grew more confident in their abilities. The bond between them deepened, and they became a true team. The upcoming Working Equitation show was the talk of the local community, and Frida could feel the excitement building. The night before the competition, Frida felt a mix of nerves and anticipation. She spent extra time grooming Freak, making sure his coat gleamed and his tack was polished. She whispered words of encouragement to him, feeling his steady presence calm her own worry.

The day of the show dawned bright and clear. Frida and Freak arrived at the competition grounds early, taking in the bustling atmosphere. Riders and horses of all breeds and backgrounds were preparing for their events, and the air was filled with a sense of competition. As they waited for their turn, Frida reviewed their routines in her mind, going over each detail they had practised. When their names were finally called, she took a deep breath and mounted Freak, feeling a rush of determination.

They entered the arena to applause from the spectators. Frida's heart swelled with pride as she guided Freak through the dressage phase, their movements synchronised and elegant. The obstacle course was next, and Frida felt a surge of joy as Freak tackled each challenge with confidence. Finally, the cattle handling phase arrived, and Frida focused on maintaining her calm, knowing Freak would take his cues from her. Together, they worked the cattle with precision and grace, earning nods of approval from the judges. As they completed their final manoeuvre, the crowd erupted in cheers. Frida patted and hugged Freak's neck, feeling like she might begin crying.

The awards ceremony was a blur of applause and congratulations. Frida and Freak weren't the winners in their category, but Frida could hardly believe they had even competed. She hugged Freak tightly, tears of joy streaming down her face. Their hard work had paid off, and they had proven to themselves and others what they were capable of.

As they left the arena, Frida knew that this was just the beginning of many more adventures with Freak. She didn't plan on any more shows but couldn't wait to see where their journey would take them next.
