Origin of a Myth
Do you like scary stories? How about I tell you a myth that's been told around here as long as I can remember.
Once there was this man; grown up in poor circumstances and with a particular interest for not only medicine but also the wish for optimizing life. A type of god complex developed while he was in medical school and realized how much control he'll have over his patients. How thin the line is between life and death and how he can dance on it. In his years as a paramedic, the thrill of saving dying people was what he fed on. But then he started questioning the meaning of life; why is it so fragile in the first place? Can't this be changed? Why shouldn't he be the one that makes living beings invincible?
His experiments started small, but quickly he realized small isn't gonna get him anywhere. Mice die too fast and bunnies don't resemble a human either. So he bought a goat, but its fragile life ended too early as well. Then one day he spotted a mare at the market; she was beautiful but not looking quite healthy. The owner explained to him that she's not been well since she got pregnant and he'd rather sell her to someone that can afford the medical care. After hearing that the man has knowledge in medicine, he lowered the price even more and the deal was made.
The first month was devoted to saving the mare, but to the "doctor" she was just the carrier of his perfect plan. Of course, the modification would have to be made before birth; an already developed human can't be fixed anymore. So he began his cruel tests and experiments—dozens of elixirs and immunization shots and other stuff was pumped into that poor mares body. The most risky procedure was the direct incision into the foal, but like a miracle; it survived and the doctor was convinced he was changing the world forever; he'll be the next creator of life, but better than god could have ever been.
To strengthen the babys muscles and maximize its power, he started implementing electroshocks into the daily routine. First gentle; then more intense and then it reached such a high level that the mare started suffering more and more. Her body has gotten weaker again with all the experiments and things put into her, but the doctor knew the time of birth was close and her life was apparently a fair sacrifice for a new invincible little creature.
When she was finally in the process of dying, he decided to bring the foal to this world by force. The mare was too weak to fight anymore, but he strapped her hooves tightly nonetheless. As he cut her open, the little boy accidentally got scratched with the knife on his eye and some other areas. The doctor wasn't pleased with the mistake he made, but the foal seemed rather stable otherwise. Yes, the day this foal was born was also the day it lost its mother. He was alive, at the cost of hers. And to the doctor's surprise, the little boy was born with skeleton markings all over. The electroshocks must have destroyed the hair's pigmentation wherever the dense bones touched skin.
Like all the other deceased animals he used before, did he bring the mom to an abandoned graveyard. No one has been buried here in a long time and none of the relatives of those that lie here are alive anymore either. The doctor was disgusted by the thought of dirt getting all over him when shoveling holes for the corpses, so he decided the easiest way to get rid of them was to put them in stone caskets that were in the crypt. The crypt was built in the middle of the graveyard and rebellious teenagers have broken down the door a long time ago.
The doctor gave the foal at least a couple hours with his mom and let him drink for a little bit to get the last bits of nutrients. The poor boy layed close to his dead mother in hopes for her to wake up, but at night the doctor loaded her onto a car trailer and covered her lifeless body with a tarp. After the heavy work was done and the most recent victim of his crimes was hidden in a stone caskets, he heard noises outside the crypt. Was it curious teenagers again? He carefully stepped outside and scanned the area for movement, but no one was there. He listened for noises, but nothing was there. "Must have been the wind" he said and went in the direction of his car. Then suddenly- breathing behind him; ...and were those footsteps? No, it can't be.... no human could breathe and walk this heavily. He turned around and the shock rolled through his entire body; the mare he just buried was standing there right before him. She let out a monstrous scream, reared and slammed him to the ground with her front hoofs. He whimpered and screamed with pain, but she had no mercy with him; a big chunk of his throat got bitten out by her and his screaming ended. Sudden silence came upon the graveyard and the mare disappeared into thin air.
The love for her child broke the bounds of that thin line between life and death. The motherly desire to keep her baby safe went further than her own being. The spiritual connection between mother and child proved biology wrong.
Being the strongest, the smartest or the prettiest will never compete with a pure heart and its deep love for another being.
The little boy, driven by desire for his mom, followed the scent of her immediately after the doctor drove off. It wasn't that far, but he couldn't walk well yet and it exhausted him so much that he fell again and again on the way.
But as he finally reached the graveyard and the smell of his mommy got stronger, he thought he finally found her. As he stumbled through the gateway of the graveyard, he saw the man and his mom. He watched the horrible scene of her killing the doctor and then disappearing into nothingness. The little foal didn't understand- why did she do that; where did she go; will she come back? Sniffing and searching didn't help anymore; she was gone.
The scent led him to a casket, but he couldn't get in there. In his despair, he decided to wait for her right there. She'll come back, right?Days and nights passed and he got weaker and weaker; refusing to leave.
No one knows what happened to the little foal; some say he died waiting for her; some say the experiments did something to him and he's still roaming that graveyard. But no one surely knows. It's just advised to not go there at night; especially not the crypt.
