Frida had spent all morning grooming and giving Freak a massage. Over the past two days, she had taken him for walks on the beach, both ridden and non-ridden. But today, she didn't have a specific plan in mind. She tacked up the oddly coloured stallion and led him toward the smaller outdoor arena, thinking they could work on his gait, which still looked very rough.

Upon arriving, they noticed that one of the boarders had already set up barrels, poles, and other obstacles in the arena. The boarder was riding her Andalusian mare, Carousel, in a collected canter, occasionally coming to sudden stops before continuing. Freak perked his ears up and watched with curiosity as the strong mare galloped over a small bridge and helped her rider open a rope gate.

“Erika, hi!” Frida called out to the rider. “Are you practising for the upcoming Working Equitation show?”

“Yeah, but I'm not competing this time. I'm holding a clinic, so I'm ensuring everything is ready!” Erika replied with a smile, wiping some sweat from her brow. “Would you like to practice with me? It's my first time teaching others, so I could use some preparation.”

Frida grinned, feeling a spark of excitement. "Absolutely, we'd love to join you," she said, patting Freak's neck reassuringly. Erika nodded, guiding Carousel towards the middle of the arena.

"Let's start with something simple," Erika suggested. "How about weaving through the poles?"

She told them what to think about when approaching the poles, and Frida led Freak to the starting point. He was attentive, his ears flicking towards the obstacles. As they started weaving through the poles, Frida focused on keeping his gait smooth, her cues gentle yet firm. Freak's steps were tentative at first, but with each turn, he grew more confident, his movements becoming more fluid.

"Good job, both of you!" Erika called out encouragingly. "Now, let's try the bridge."

Erika once more let her friends know what to think about during the exercise. Frida felt a twinge of nerves; Freak's gait was sometimes wobbly and she felt unsure if he could balance on the bridge. She approached it slowly, letting him sniff and investigate. Erika and Carousel demonstrated first, crossing the bridge with ease. Inspired, Frida gave Freak a little nudge. He hesitated but then stepped onto the bridge, his hooves clattering against the wood. Frida praised him lavishly, and they continued across, gaining momentum.

"Excellent! You're doing great," Erika said. "Now for the rope gate. Keep in mind that once you've opened the rope, you need to turn on the forehand, rein back, then close again."

This time, Frida felt a surge of confidence. She guided Freak towards the gate, focusing on maintaining a steady pace. With a practised hand, she opened the gate, turned her horse on the forehand, and Freak backed through without a hitch. They had done it and practised all of the exercises a couple more times.

"You're both naturals!" Erika exclaimed. Frida beamed. Her bond with Freak was getting stronger each day, and he was finally getting into shape.
