[Bonus Prompt]A Little History
Raya swiped through her phone as she lay in the shade of a pine tree, needles prickling her legs. She had become curious to find out more about this horse and what made her so anti-trailer.
A notification popped up on her phone. It was the rescue, sending her an email with the subject, “rainy day trailer accident: two horses injured”.
Her heart skipped a beat. This had to be what she was looking for. She swiftly opened the link to a digital newspaper that covered the event.
“Early Wednesday morning on Saturday, April 3rd, a truck and trailer were t-boned by an impaired driver. The vehicle struck at such an angle that the trailer attached, hauling three horses at the time, was ripped off the back of the truck and rolled down the hill into the lake below. By some stroke of luck, the back door was also blasted off by the impact and allowed the horses, tied with emergency clips, were able to swim out the back and resurface. The two geldings in the trailer were recovered by a by-stander, but the mare decided to flee the scene and swam to the opposite bank and took off into the woods. Search and rescue found her three hours later and brought her back to the vet clinic to be vetted.
“It's a miracle any of them are alive.” Said Dr. Vatten, head veterinarian of Sand Grove Vet Clinic. “But especially this mare. Her X-rays showed a fracture to her leg that will easily heal. She may not be 100% sound again, but this leg can heal with time and patience.”
The news station has no new news on the driver of the truck other than he is alive and being treated successfully at the nearby hospital. He is expected to make a full recovery.”
Raya frowned at her phone. So much crap this poor mare has gone through. At least her fears made sense now.
Another attachment came through from the rescue. It was a copy of her surrender file.
“Name: Molly
Age: ~13
Height: 15.3hh
Weight: 1000lbs
Body Score: 5 (healthy)
Surrender Note: Owner surrender after gaining significant injuries from a serious trailer accident. Brought to us as they did not have the time or money to put into a horse they couldn't show consistently."
She stood from the shade of her tree and headed towards the barn where the mare was still waiting in her stall, munching on hay, anxiously now as she'd seen the stranger approach her.
Raya looked at the horse beside her. “Molly.”
The mare turned and looked at her, eyes wide as if she hadn't heard anyone say her name in so long. She nickered softly to her, taking a step towards her.
Raya grinned. “Hello there.” She stretches a hand out for the mare to sniff, which she tenderly touched and gave a big sigh. “I suppose learning your name is a good ice breaker huh?” She sat and patted the mare for minute, then looked at the time and realized she was almost late leaving for her other job. She tossed a treat in the mares bucket and headed towards her car, feeling proud.
