Nightfall Stables - 06/05

It was 7am, the entire stable was calm, some employees were walking from one side to the other, carrying hay, cleaning stalls and transporting horses from one place to another, all because of the new tenant who was about to arrive, a horse undergoing rehabilitation... everyone was looking forward to its arrival, and what an arrival.... as soon as the trailer stopped and the sound of neighing and kicking came from inside, it was clear that the work ahead would be big...

As soon as they took him out of the trailer, there was a huge commotion, you could hear neighing from the other side of the pastures, there was a lot of running around, the boy who was holding him could barely carry the horse, he backed off, reared up and got stuck so many times, he wanted to let go of the reins, get out of that place... They tried to put him in the stall... bad idea, the horse avoided going in every way, it was sad to see, and when he got in he didn't stay there for long, he screamed and kicked the stall door several times, so I finally intervened, deciding that, based on his emotional state, it was best for him to stay in the pasture, in a separate area.

I took him to a paddock, quite separated from the other horses, as now it was better to be alone for a while, we couldn't know how he would react to the others.

And as soon as I released him into the paddock, he took off running, running across the pasture, around the fence, and he didn't look like a happy horse excited to expend energy, he looked like a scared horse, trying to get away from something, even if he didn't know what. that was. I knew what he was running from... and I saw in his eyes how lost he was... I read his records and understood why the fear, the fire, of feeling trapped, of being one of the last to be taken away... all of this left him so traumatized and it hurt me to see such a beautiful animal in such a terrible situation...

After seeing him running around the paddock, I decided to try to go in with some snacks, he seemed calmer when I came in, or rather, he seemed tired, and the smell of the sugar lumps contributed to his focus stopping from racing and keep doing it. a snack. I called him, trying not to make too much noise or sudden movements, extending my hand with the lumps of sugar to him, and finally, he came a little closer, sniffing.

Me: shhh, it's okay, good boy...

He relaxes more, eating the lumps of sugar, he becomes much calmer, now that he doesn't feel trapped, it's easy to see that he's a gentle boy, a good boy, no He is neither aggressive nor dangerous, he is just scared.

Me: What a beautiful boy, everything is fine now, we will take care of you.

I whisper, stroking his muzzle, and he snorts, closing his eyes. Things seem to calm down, but we have a long way to go, a lot of training and affection, to teach him not to be afraid anymore, that everything is fine now, and that I will be here to take care of him.
